A Must Read for Anyone Dating or Considering Marriage Let me start by saying this book was absolutely fantastic. I wish I had read it when I first started dating because I would have saved me a lot of heartache and time. The great thing about this book is that it is direct and to the point. All the chapters are niecly done and they even have questions to guide you. For example, I have often read relationship books that talk about values, but they always have left me wondering what mine are. The chapter on values in this book, however, did just the opposite. It listed about 40 common values people have (improving oneself, the environment, spirituality, loyalty, etc) and then asked a series of directed questions to help you (and your significant other if you are reading the book together) determine your core values. For example, (and I am paraphrasing here): In what four areas of your life do you spend most of your time and/or energy? Why? If your children could only have three values, what would you want them to be? Etc. I also really enjoyed the chapter that discussed love vs. infatuation and provided ways to determine whether you loved someone or were infatuated with them. That chapter alone could have saved me 2+ years in a long-term relationship with the wrong (but nice) guy. The best chapter in the entire book and my personal favorite is "The Case for Marriage." It really changed the way I look at marriage by discussing what you can do to ensure you have a happy marriage and why you should even consider marrying when the divorce rate is so high. In fact, I liked it so much that I am going to read a section of it at my sister's wedding this year. It is that good. Who should read this book? I think it is a great book for couples and also a great book for singles who are trying to figure out why their past relationships soured. I would even recommend it to people in so-so or bad relationships because it will help them determine whether their issues are really deal-breakers and whether they need to get out. I read this book with my boyfriend as we are considering marriage and found the questions very helpful.
Indispensable tools for a marriage that will withstand the hurricane-force winds of today's culture. 'Must' reading for young people, older people, dating couples and married couples, parents, in-laws, clergy and therapists...
Too many people blindly stroll the aisle into marriage thinking they are madly in love, when actually they are blinded by infatuation. I Only Want to Get Married Once is a tool that will help single adults objectively evaluate their relationships and avoid the heartache of marrying the wrong person. It is also a helpful resource for improving existing marriages.. Knowing God's plan is that we marry for life, I highly recommend this practical concise book!
